This is the 4th blog post in a 4-part series offering New Year’s Solutions for your companion animals.

\n

Whether you’re planning to purchase or currently raising goats, we are here to provide some helpful solutions and giveaways for the New Year. Read on to find out what you could win!

\n

From promoting animal safety to improved well-being, there are many things you can do for your goats to keep them healthy in 2018. Let’s start the year with good nutrition for your goats.

\n

Goat milk continues to gain popularity for those who can’t tolerate cow milk as well as a premium ingredient for natural yogurts and artisan cheeses. Therefore, what you feed the lactating doe is a critical part of the process. Alfalfa has a reputation of being the “go to” forage for dairy goats with its high calorie, high protein, and high calcium content. If your doe is pregnant, you can transition them in late pregnancy from grass hay to a mix, then to alfalfa while they are milking.

\n \"Milking\n

Expert Spotlight: “Deborah Niemann has found that if you are having trouble getting does milked before they finish eating their grain, try mixing in alfalfa pellets with it. It will help slow them down from eating too fast and prevents them from protesting about being on the milk stand.”

\n

We also now offer an Organic Alfalfa Pellet that makes it easy for goats of all breeds and ages to chew. If you are looking for an organic, non-gmo feed alternative, this product is perfect for you. Romeo pictured below loves his Standlee Organic Alfalfa Pellets!

\n \"Goat\n

We cannot iterate enough how important it is to provide your goats the closest thing to their natural nutrition as possible. Since, they are peinned up in their unnatural habitats they do not have access to the vitamins and minerals they need to survive. Supplementing them with minerals will make up for these deficiencies that occur, but it is important to know what your goats are lacking.

\n

Deborah Niemann discusses nutrition along with many other topics in her book “Raising Goats Naturally. She mentions that well-nourished goats will have a shiny coat with soft hair, their body condition will be excellent, fertility and milk production will be good, and kidding problems will be rare. If you are encountering issues with your goats, then it is probably a good idea to look closely at their diet and your supplementation program to see if they could be deficient in key nutrients.

\n

\n

What does my horse need to survive?

\n

Horses require three important needs in their diets, including fiber, essential nutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals) and water, the single most important nutrient. They can survive a few weeks on water alone, if necessary, but only a few days with no water. Here’s another way to look at it, a horse can lose almost all of its body fat and over 50% of its protein and still survive. However, a loss of only 10% of its water reservoir will devastate the health of the horse.

\n\"Woman\n

Is my horse getting enough water?

\n
\n\t\"Estimated\n\t
Estimated water needs of a 1100lb horse
\n
\n

Water requirements for horses is dependent upon environmental temperature, exercise or activity, lactation and the type and amount of feed consumed. The minimal daily water maintenance requirement of an inactive adult horse in a very comfortable environment is 0.5 gal per 100 lbs. of body weight per day (this assuming the horse is consuming at least 1.5% of its body weight in feed dry matter. This would result in about a 6 gal. requirement for a 1,100 lb. horse. Surrounding temperatures exceeding 85°F will increase how often and how much a horse will drink, while colder temperatures, below 45°F can cause a horse to drink less water. While sweating from the summer heat is a major culprit for dehydration, frozen water sources during the winter months can cause water deprivation as well.

\n\n

What are symptoms of horse dehydration?

\n

Each horse is different, but here are some signs to determine if your horse is dehydrated:

\n\n

Answering yes to any of the above questions, could be cause for dehydration concern. Severe dehydration can result in digestive upset or "impaction colic", or even be fatal, so it is critical to call your veterinarian.

\n

My horse won’t drink water when traveling.

\n

Just like us, horses have their own personalities – that includes differing likes and dislikes. As a horse owner, you know they can be picky! Hard water (high levels of calcium and other minerals), pH levels and even total dissolved solids can affect water palatability – none of which are visible to the naked eye. Soaking forage can help make the water more palatable. Also, be sure to stop often (every couple of hours) to offer your horse water, as that is half the battle.

\n\"Horses\n

Tips to get your horse to drink more water and prevent dehydration:

\n\n

A proactive approach is always better than defensive. Take measures to keep your horse hydrated this winter and summer. If you have questions or concerns, be sure to consult with your veterinarian.

Most of us are aware that Jack Frost knows how to turn on the chill and this time of year a few snowflakes can often mean the start of a huge blizzard. With plummeting temperatures, being outside becomes a challenge and being cooped up inside can lead to boredom. To make the next few months a bit more bearable we’d like to offer some suggestions to give your flock a safe home throughout the year, particularly during the winter months.

\n\"Chickens\n
    \n
  1. Chickens are naturally equipped to protect themselves from the cold; fluffing their feathers allows them to retain body heat and insulate themselves from the cold. But they don’t stand a chance of retaining that heat if their feathers are ruffled by drafts! Thoroughly check your coop for drafts, especially around windows, doors and nest boxes. Patch or caulk any gaps or holes to prevent heat loss and drafts on your birds on the roost at night. Make sure to leave adequate ventilation at the top of the coop to reduce humidity that could otherwise hasten frostbite in cold temperatures.
  2. \n
  3. Proper litter management ensures your ability to control moisture and keep the flock’s living space healthy and comfortable. Standlee’s Flock Fresh® is a great litter option; its combination of straw, alfalfa and zeolite naturally reduces moisture, keeping the coop dry. Save that spent litter for composting for an unbeatable soil amendment to your gardens in the spring!
  4. \n
  5. Just like humans, hens get bored being cooped up in winter. Chickens can develop problem behaviors like feather picking and egg-eating. Keep their beaks busy by encouraging your flock to peck through their litter by using Flock Fresh®, a combination of chopped straw, chopped hay and alfalfa, which is always a favorite of our feathered friends! Promoting this hunting and pecking activity ensures chickens are kept busy and out of mischief.
  6. \n
  7. Chickens can be reluctant to leave the coop with snow on the ground outside the pop hole door, but who can blame them? Ensure a clear path outside the coop by shoveling and spread Standlee Certified Chopped Straw on the ground to make their winter outings a bit more appealing.
  8. \n\"Chicken\n
  9. If you are trying to keep your egg production up in the winter consider adding artificial light and curtains to your nesting boxes. Curtains help keep eggs out of view and limit the risk of turning bored chickens into egg-eating chickens. Curtains can help conserve heat inside the nest box while a hen is laying an egg and help prevent eggs from freezing. They’re super cute coop decor too, so why not add nest box curtains?
  10. \n
  11. Speaking of nesting boxes, why not add some aromatherapy to your coop and brighten up the dark days of winter? Add The Chicken Chick’s Spruce the Coop® Herbal Fusion Nest Box Herbs to litter, nest boxes, and dust bath areas to impart a delightful scent to your chicken’s environment! Keep reading for a chance to win a free bag of Spruce the Coop®!
  12. \n\"Chickens\n
  13. Finally, ensure your flock has a comfortable place to roost this winter to keep warm and dry. Use 2x4s with the wide side facing up, which allows chickens to cover their feet completely with the warmth of their abdomen and insulation of their feathers. Keep your roost area and dropping boards dry with The Chicken Chick’s Sweet Coop™ zeolite. Zeolite is a naturally-occurring mineral produced from volcanic activity that absorbs moisture and attracts harmful ammonia molecules like a magnet, binding them to its surface. Sweet Coop® is a natural way to control moisture and harmful gas odor in the coop for a sweeter, healthier home for your chickens. Liberally sprinkle Sweet Coop® onto dropping boards and onto litter in between cleanings to maintain a clean, dry coop for your sleeping beauties.

\n

We are so excited to share with you our winter solutions for 2018! Interested in winning a blanket for your horse? Read on to find out how.

\n

You are settling down with your first cup of coffee in the morning. The fire is going, your snuggly socks are on your feet and the blanket is wrapped around you, keeping the cold winter chill at bay. You are not looking forward to going out later into the cold winds but are thankful for the warm boots and coat to shield yourself from the winter weather.

\n\"Horses\n

Winter weather can be a challenge to equine owners and their beloved animals. Snow, wind, rain and plunging temperatures are worrisome for your horse’s health. Thankfully there are some simple steps you can take to make sure that your horse is kept in good shape through the winter season.

\n

During the winter, some horses have challenges keeping warm. Their health is heavily dependent on their nutritional regimen. Fresh water always needs to be available to them or they will become dehydrated. Another very beneficial factor is forage. The fiber from hay is crucial because the digestion and fermentation of it helps horses maintain their body temperature. Horses use a lot of energy to stay warm so there might even be an increase of quality hay needed.

\n\"Horses\n

Maybe you are wondering about a blanket for your horse. While it is true that during the winter, horses develop a haircoat that is long and thick that should give them enough insolation, there are some special circumstances that you might be on the lookout for.

\n\n

Now that you have decided to blanket your horse, here are some simple tips to get you started on picking the right one.
